Mary Maertens Honored with State and National Hospital Association Awards
Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center President and CEO, Mary Maertens, is the recipient of the Minnesota Hospital Association’s 2015 Spirit of Advocacy Award. She has also been named the American Hospital Association’s Grassroots Champion for Minnesota.
The MHA Spirit of Advocacy Award honors an MHA member who has provided leadership within his/her organization and served in key roles with the MHA governance structure during the year. Judging is based on the following criteria:
- Demonstrated leadership in MHA’s governance structure, committees or work groups.
- Grassroots advocacy efforts in his/her facility or community to benefit Minnesota’s hospitals and health systems.
- Demonstrated leadership at the community level in promotion of health care issues.
Mary’s involvement in MHA includes active participation in the Policy and Advocacy Committee, Nurse Staffing Committee and as chair of Minnesota Hospitals: Strengthening Healthy Communities campaign steering committee. She extends her knowledge and experience outside of Minnesota to generate grassroots and community activity in support of the mission of Minnesota hospitals.
The AHA Grassroots Champion Award recognizes hospital leaders who create dialogue with elected officials on how major issues affect the hospital’s vital role in the community, who have done an exemplary job in broadening the base of community support for the hospital and who are tireless advocates for hospitals and their patients. One champion is named from each state. Mary was the winner of the Minnesota award.
Mary was presented with both awards at the Minnesota Hospital Association Awards Ceremony on April 24, 2015 in Minneapolis.
Mary has worked at Avera Marshall since 1988. She began her career in health care as a registered nurse and held a variety of nursing and leadership roles before becoming the organization's president and CEO in 2007.
