Avera Marshall Announces Plans for New Emergency Department

Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center announces plans for a new hospital Emergency Department.

Construction is planned to begin after the first of the year, and will involve remodeling of existing space plus an addition on the southwest portion of the campus.

The 10,540-square-foot Emergency Department (ED) will have a total of 10 patient care rooms – all of which are private – and a new ambulance garage. There will be two rooms specifically for trauma care, and eight treatment rooms, with two of these rooms having the option for use as observation rooms. Observation status is when a patient is kept in the hospital for testing and evaluation, but is not yet admitted as an inpatient.

The new ED layout features a Lean design for staff efficiency and patient friendliness that is characteristic of other recently constructed Avera emergency departments. This includes an inner staff core and outer patient hallway, which serves as an efficient model for the work of caregiving, yet is a calm environment for patients and their families.

The project cost is $6 million, and currently the Avera Marshall Foundation is conducting a $600,000 fundraising campaign to contribute toward this project.

The ED was last remodeled in 1997, when the hospital served fewer than 4,900 emergency patients per year. In 2016, 7,800 patients were seen in the ED – a 60 percent increase from nearly 20 years ago. Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center is the only hospital with a Level III trauma designation within 60 miles.

This project doubles the square footage of the ED, with improved patient privacy and a controlled entrance to improve security and safety for patients, staff and community members.

“We are tremendously excited about our plans for a new Emergency Department to serve Marshall and the surrounding communities. This new facility will accommodate the increased volume of emergency visits we’ve seen in recent years, as well as the latest technology in emergency care. Emergency services always come unexpectedly to patients and their families, and so we are pleased that we’ll be able to offer a larger and improved environment for the best possible care experience,” said Mary Maertens, Regional President and CEO of Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center.
