Avera Readies to Open the Avera Addiction Care Center

Avera is readying to open the Avera Addiction Care Center on the Avera on Louise Health Campus in southwest Sioux Falls.

A community open house is set for Sunday, Nov. 24, from noon to 2 p.m. The first residents will be admitted to the center in mid-December.

The Avera Addiction Care Center is a voluntary 28-day residential treatment center that uses a variety of evidence-based, individualized approaches to treat alcohol and drug addiction, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing.

The center offers medical stabilization and medication assisted treatment (MAT). All therapists are co-certified in addiction and mental health, and psychiatrists will regularly round at the center. Programming also includes a robust family component.

The two-building, 20,000-square foot complex is comprised of a residential building with 32 private rooms, and a main building for treatment and programming. A fitness center, centering room, meditation room and business center are on site, with outdoor gathering spaces complete with fire pits and walking paths. Donors gave over $1 million to support this $8 million project.

“Everything from the daily programming, to the furnishings, to the smells, sounds and tastes, was planned with three value statements in mind: Respect, confidence and hope. The center is a serene, beautiful environment that upholds the dignity of each individual,” said Thomas Otten, Assistant Vice President for Avera Behavioral Health Services.

A community advisory group began meeting 18 months in advance to plan details of the facility. Members were individuals and family members impacted by addiction, behavioral health therapists, psychiatrists, concerned community members and Avera leaders.

“Avera has a 60-year history as this region’s leader in behavioral health care,” said Matthew Stanley, DO, Vice President for the Behavioral Health Clinical Service Line and Medical Director of Avera Behavioral Health Services. “This was an important addition to our full continuum of care. Our region, like the rest of the country, has an addiction rate of around 10%. It’s a tremendously damaging illness that’s often hard to recognize and hard to treat. It’s taking lives. Addiction is severely impacting a lot of families and individuals.”

Avera’s membership in the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation Patient Care Network provides a wealth of resources for both therapists and residents.

“At Avera, we have a commitment to high quality. Through the development of the Avera Addiction Care Center, we have become more invested in this needed model of care,” Stanley said. “We are melding Avera’s expertise in treating other mental and physical illnesses along with addictions. Ultimately, we’re striving to give people hope for overcoming addiction and returning to a higher quality of life.”
