Avera Hospitals Earn 5-Star Ratings
Five Avera hospitals were named 5-Star facilities by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
The five South Dakota sites earning the highest (5-star) rating include:
- Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen
- Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, Mitchell
- Avera St. Mary’s Hospital, Pierre
- Avera Heart Hospital, Sioux Falls
- Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton
“Earning the highest possible rating is a reflection of the dedication that our employees and providers bring to Avera’s mission each day,” said David Erickson, MD, Avera Chief Medical and Innovation Officer. “It further reinforces the dedication we bring to our communities and the patients we serve. It also reminds us that we must continue to innovate and improve, on behalf of those we serve.”
The Hospital Compare overall hospital rating system summarizes a variety of quality measures into a single star rating making it easier for consumers to compare hospitals. CMS created the system in 2008, and it uses information from Health Care Surveys (both standard and complaint), Quality Measures and Staffing. Star ratings enable consumers to more quickly and easily assess the patient experience of care information that is provided on the Hospital Compare website.
On Jan. 29, 2020, CMS updated data on Hospital Compare, including the overall hospital quality star rating. Over 4,500 hospitals were part of this recent data refresh. The five top performing Avera sites consistently exceeded national and state scores. A five star rating is a significant achievement with less than nine percent of hospitals across the country reaching that level of recognition.
