Avera Marshall Plans Remodeling Project to Enhance the Patient Experience
Avera is planning a remodeling project at Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center that will improve the patient experience in several areas of the Bruce Street campus and the nearby 1104 East College Drive building.
"This project will modernize clinic and patient space to accommodate the latest technology and complement the excellent care that’s provided each and every day by our vibrant, growing medical group," said Mary Maertens, Regional President and CEO for Avera Marshall. "This will ultimately create a more welcoming, comfortable experience for our patients while increasing efficiency and saving health care dollars in the long term."
The project is designed to accommodate the growth and change experienced by Avera Marshall over the last several years. "We will reconfigure and modernize some portions of the building to fit the way we deliver care today and relocate some services to provide easier access for patients," Maertens said.
One example is moving Avera Marshall’s busy physical and occupational therapy services to the East College Drive location for greater patient access and convenience. Urgent Care will be relocated to be close to the Emergency Department.
Other goals of the project include establishing space for cardiology care; remodeling space for diabetic education, visiting specialists and the Coumadin clinic; improving the patient’s lab experience; and moving home medical equipment to a location that’s ideal for retail. As part of this project, a second public elevator will be added in the hospital to enhance flow of patients and visitors between floors.
Also for patient convenience and cost effectiveness, Avera will consolidate care to Avera Marshall’s Bruce Street campus and permanently move services from the Carlson Street campus.
Avera Marshall does not plan to return to the Carlson Street campus in the future, but may use the building in the short term as transitional space or for surge space if needed in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Avera Marshall is working with the City of Marshall and Economic Development Authority to explore opportunities for a new use of the Carlson Street building in the future.
Avera’s Facility Development team is working with national design firm HGA to plan this $6.5 million project. The proposed timeline calls for construction to take place from December 2020 through late 2021.
"Consolidating to one campus will be the best use of our resources. When the Avera and ACMC practices came together a year and a half ago, we knew we would need to make this transition at some point. We didn’t anticipate it would be so soon, but COVID-19 accelerated the timeline," said Dr. Steve Meister, Chief Medical Officer, Avera Marshall. "We know members of the community and our own team miss receiving and providing care at that location, however these enhancements at the Bruce Street campus will provide a better experience, streamlined care and better continuity of care for all our patients."
