Avera Critical Access Hospitals Named to National Top 20 Lists

Three critical access hospitals affiliated with Avera Health have been named to national Top 20 lists recently announced by the National Rural Health Association.

Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller, S.D., was named as a Top 20 Critical Access Hospital overall. It was also listed among the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals in the nation as announced in February 2022.

“The Top 20 list is a high honor and a recognition of our local hospital’s overall quality and strength. It reflects high quality care, great service, high value and financial strength. I’m proud of our amazing staff who work very hard to sustain this level of excellence,” said Bryan Breitling, Administrator of Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital.

Avera Dells Area Hospital in Dell Rapids, S.D., and Platte Health Center Avera in Platte, S.D., were both awarded the 2022 Top 20 Best Practices in Patient Satisfaction designation. This means these hospitals ranked in the Top 20 for patient satisfaction among all critical access hospitals in the U.S.

“A great patient experience is an important aspect of overall health care, and it goes hand in hand with great quality. At Avera Dells Area Hospital and Platte Health Center Avera, our teams work hard to focus on patients and their families, treating them with the care and compassion Avera is known for,” said Curt Hohman, Avera Senior Vice President for Managed Facilities.

“This award would not be possible without the amazing team of providers, nurses and staff at Avera Dells Area Hospital. The last two years have been some of the most difficult in rural health care delivery and this team stepped up to provide the highest level of care to their community and patients,” said Teri Bergeleen, Interim Administrator of Avera Dells Area Hospital.

“Each and every employee has an important role in making a positive impact on the lives of the people we serve. We strive to treat every person we encounter with dignity and respect as this sets the tone for the overall patient experience,” said Mark Burket, Administrator of Platte Health Center Avera.

The National Rural Health Association (NRHA) announced the Top 20 lists based on an evaluation by the Chartis Center for Rural Health.

“Being named to these national top 20 lists is a tremendous honor,” said Bob Sutton, Avera President and CEO. “It is confirmation that the professionals who bring our health care ministry to life every day are second to none. The quality of care and service they provide to our patients is outstanding.”

These hospitals will be recognized Sept. 23 during NRHA’s Critical Access Hospital Conference in Kansas City, Mo.

Top hospitals are identified using the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX, the most comprehensive and objective assessment of critical access hospital performance.

Determining factors for the top 20 rural and community hospitals are based on eight indices: inpatient market share, outpatient market share, quality, outcomes, patient perspective, cost, charge and financial efficiency. Hospitals with the patient satisfaction designation are ranked according to the patient satisfaction domain of this index.

“NRHA is committed to ensuring our members have the best information to manage their hospitals,” says Brock Slabach, NRHA membership services senior vice president. “We’re pleased to recognize the accomplishments of these critical access hospitals.”
