Avera Donates Former Hospital Site for Potential Aquatic Center in Gregory

Avera logoAvera has offered to donate its former hospital land site in Gregory, SD, for a new aquatics center.

Demolition of the old hospital on the west side of Gregory took place this spring. “As we considered use of this land, we knew there was already a fundraising effort under way in Gregory for a future aquatic center. After discussing the idea with Avera leaders, we offered this to the city to see if it would help bring this dream closer to reality,” said Tony Timanus, CEO of Avera Gregory Hospital.

The Gregory City Council recently accepted the donation. Avera’s offer to donate of the 12 acres, valued at $96,000, stands for five years, allowing time to continue fundraising and develop plans.

In early 2023, Avera Gregory Hospital opened its new health campus on 12 acres of land east of Gregory on U.S. Highway 18. This new campus integrates a 17-bed hospital, 30-bed long-term care center and Avera Medical Group clinic.

“Avera cares for the whole person, body, mind and spirit. Prevention is just as important – if not more important – than treating illness or injury, and fitness is a big component. We hope our donation will add to the great quality of life we have in Gregory, and that working together, we can create a place for healthy and wholesome activity for individuals and families,” Timanus said.
