PHRAME a Study of MARCH

PHRAME (Perinatal Health Research and Action for Maternal Equity) is a community-based research project to identify actions that can reduce maternal morbidity (health complications during pregnancy, childbirth, or postpartum) for Western South Dakotans in need.

PHRAME activities towards this goal involve collaborating to find strategies that can better ensure that Indigenous and low-income pregnant and postpartum people can access high quality resources for perinatal health.

PHRAME includes multiple research activities in Rapid City-Spearfish Metro Area and the Pine Ridge Reservation communities that involve:

• Community members developing visual maps that represent key barriers/or supports in maternal healthcare quality and access.
• Computer simulations that compare strategies to improve perinatal health access and quality.
• Surveys that assess individual experiences across pregnancy and postpartum.
• Network maps that represent the process of policy making for perinatal health in health systems and local, Tribal, and state governance.

• Share your personal or professional experience with maternal health and health care.
• Share your ideas to improve this care.
• Collaborate on developing an action plan to reduce barriers and increase quality health care for women.

Research Conversation

You can contribute by participating in research conversations. Your participation will help your community respond to increase maternal health access and quality care.

Eligibility

• You live in one of the following areas now, Lawrence, Butte, Custer, Meade, or Pennington Counties or in the Pine Ridge Reservation area.
• You’re at least 18 years old.
• At least one of these statements applies to you:
  • You have personal experience with being pregnant and/or giving birth in the past 3 years.
  • You have professional experience with providing or managing health-related care for people during pregnancy, or postpartum.

About the Compensation & Commitment

You can participate in a three-hour group session or 90-minute individual interview. You can receive $50 per hour as compensation.

Complete a Survey

You can help by completing two surveys. Your participation will help your community work towards developing a plan of action to improve perinatal health care.

Eligibility

• You live in Lawrence, Butte, Custer, Meade, or Pennington counties, or in the Pine Ridge Reservation area.
• You’re at least 18 years old.
• You have been pregnant in the last 3 years.
• You self-identify as Alaska Native/American Indian and/or you were eligible for social benefits such SNAP, WIC or Medicaid during your last pregnancy (even if you didn’t use them).

About the Compensation & Commitment

You can receive $50 for each survey. Each survey will take about 1 hour to complete. These surveys can be completed remotely or in person.
