Grief Support Services

The loss of a loved one deeply affects you, your family and even your day-to-day and work life. Those in grief can feel depression, anxiety, hopelessness and be overwhelmed by physical responsibilities such as planning funeral arrangements, fulfilling the deceased person’s wishes and caring for surviving relatives — which can hinder the grieving process.

If you’re having a difficult time coping, receive the help you need with friendship and understanding in one of our support groups or with one of our expert grief counselors.

Child and Adolescent Grief Program

Counselors who specialize in children and adolescents see clients individually or as a family for grief needs. There is a charge for these services, but most are covered by insurance. We would be happy to check insurance coverage for clients.

Other Avera locations also offer grief and loss support programs. Contact your local facility to find additional opportunities.

Non-Bereavement Grief

Grief comes in many shapes and forms. It’s complex and unique to each of us. Making our way through grief is a journey with stages. Grief can be experienced for many reasons other than a death of a loved one or relative.

You can experience grief from a lost life-long dream or ambition, a lost job or home, a lost relationship or terminal illness, and perhaps grief of the loss of who you used to be. All grief forms are important to recognize, address and put steps into place to begin healing.

Individual, Family or Group Counseling

If one-on-one therapy, family or group therapy is what you prefer, ask to schedule an appointment with one of our experienced grief counseling specialists and contact your local facility. We’d be honored to know your story and share in your recovery. Ask us about grief counseling therapy options near you.

You can also find additional support groups for other behavioral health conditions.
