Child and Adolescent Inpatient Programs
The decision to admit a child to the hospital can be difficult, but you can trust Avera Behavioral Health to meet psychological, physical, social and spiritual needs during an inpatient stay.
With our new expansion at the Avera Behavioral Health Hospital, the Helmsley Behavioral Health Center offers more inpatient space for youth. Children ages 5 to 12 years old and adolescents ages 13 to 17 years old can benefit from our child and adolescent inpatient programs. Within a structured and age-appropriate therapeutic environment, they learn to understand problems, use healthy coping skills, and set and complete goals.
Common conditions that benefit from inpatient care for children and adolescents include, but are not limited to:
- Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Anxiety disorders
- Behavioral and mental health concerns
- Depression
- Suicidal behavior
Adult Inpatient Programs
As an adult, 18 years old or older, you can receive the focused treatment you need in one of our customized inpatient programs.
Your team of providers including psychologists and therapists will work with you to perform a comprehensive assessment of your mental health needs, evaluate your diagnoses and develop a treatment plan that addresses your specific situation.
Common conditions that benefit from adult inpatient treatment include, but aren't limited to:

Senior Inpatient Programs
Adults 65 years old and older require special care and attention. That’s what you can expect in our senior inpatient programs – welcoming, calming, and healing environments with special considerations for safety and comfort. In Sioux Falls, the senior inpatient unit is located on the second floor in the new Helmsley Behavioral Health Center in Sioux Falls.
In addition to individual treatment, seniors enjoy group therapies and activities that encourage socialization and support, such as Arts in Healing and reminiscence.
