Therapy & Treatments

Avera Brain & Spine Institute is equipped with the latest in neuroimaging advancements and state-of-the-art technology.

  • Neuroendovascular surgery takes place in Sioux Falls, SD, and involves advanced operational tools and high-definition imaging technology.
  • Surgeons treat challenging neurovascular disorders with minimally invasive techniques through a remote incision that’s less than a quarter of an inch (smaller than the size of pea).
  • Gamma Knife (gold-standard treatment for brain tumors) is a non-invasive approach to deliver a high dose of radiation to tumors or areas of disease with high precision and without damaging nearby tissue.

After Surgery

After a patient has received minimally invasive brain or spine care, such as surgery, they will receive close monitoring of neurological status, vital signs and more as necessary.

Your doctor and care team will explain what to expect and recommend the best recovery treatment plan for your unique situation. Patients may receive a referral to inpatient rehabilitation if needed after surgery. They may also be referred to work with physical therapists to help restore speech, movement or vision as normal.

Neurosurgery FAQ

Your provider is your most reliable source for answers. Explore frequently asked questions to learn more.

Is brain surgery a complex procedure?

While the nervous system is the most complex system in the body, neurosurgery is not in itself significantly more complex than other types of surgery. However, unlike other body tissue, nerve tissue cannot be repaired, so there is simply no room for error.

Avera neurosurgeons and oncologists are highly skilled, experienced and equipped to help patients with brain disorders, like tumors.

What are signs of a brain tumor?

If you notice any of these signs and symptoms, tell your doctor to see if a visit with a specialist is right for you.

  • Changes in speech, vision, hearing, memory or personality
  • Constant fatigue
  • Dizziness, nausea or vomiting
  • Numbness or weakness in the arms, legs or face
  • Problems with balance or walking
  • Severe headache
  • Seizures

Avera experts can detect and treat tumors, both cancerous and non-cancerous, as well as lesions and neurological complications.

What do neuroendovascular specialists do?

Our neuroendovascular specialist uses minimally invasive methods to treat disorders of blood vessels involving the head, neck and spine, whether it be on an emergent or elective basis.

What is Gamma Knife?

The Gamma Knife itself is a large device that looks like a CT or MRI machine. It’s a type of high-dose, high-precision radiation therapy to treat small, targeted areas of the brain or spine without damaging nearby tissue.

This treatment does not require incisions, and can effectively treat:

  • Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs): occurs due to an incorrect formation of blood vessels
  • Brain tumors (benign and malignant)
  • Epilepsy and seizures
  • Movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease
  • Trigeminal neuralgia: nerve disorder causing intense pain in the face

What happens if I need spine surgery?

If spinal surgery is determined to be necessary, your care team will talk to you about what happens before, during and after the operation. Minimally invasive options, including robotic-assisted surgeries, are always considered first.

Patients needing spine surgery can count on neurosurgeons at the Avera Brain & Spine Institute.

What are some conditions that pediatric neurologists treat?

Pediatric neurologists diagnose, manage and treat neurological conditions in newborns, infants, children and adolescents, such as:

  • Developmental delays
  • Epilepsy and seizures
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Neonatal neurology
  • Pediatric stroke
