Not everyone with serious back and neck pain needs surgery. A range of nonsurgical care is available for disorders and conditions affecting your spine and neurological system.

Find Relief from Back Pain

When back pain interrupts your life, the Avera Spine Center team is here to help you find relief. We work with you, loved ones and all members of your care team to determine the best steps ahead until you feel better.

Specialist Appointment

At your appointment, a specialist will review your back and neck symptoms and your health history with you to determine the best treatment. Nonsurgical methods, such as physical therapy, medications and injections, are possible options considered before surgery.

Treatments & Follow-Up

Follow-up appointments will help to determine if any of these current methods are helping you. We do our best to provide treatment options that don’t involve surgery. In some cases, though, your provider may schedule an evaluation with a surgeon.

Surgical Evaluation

If surgery is determined to be necessary, your care team will talk to you about what happens before, during and after the operation.

Cutting-Edge Technology

Experienced spinal surgeons provide innovative treatments and minimally invasive options including robotic-assisted surgeries. Navigational robotics offer surgeons a better view to perform surgery with increased accuracy and precision. Some of this technology includes:

  • Gamma Knife®, a large device that looks like a CT or MRI machine, is used on small, targeted areas of the spine (or brain).
  • O-arm™ Surgical Imaging System provides 2D and 3D imaging to guide surgery.
  • The ProAxis® Spinal Surgery Table is an advanced operating table designed for the unique needs of spine surgery. MOVETHIS

Spine Care FAQ

Your provider is your most reliable source for answers. Explore frequently asked questions about spine care to learn more.

How can I treat back pain without surgery?

Your provider can discuss nonsurgical methods for treating back pain with you. Some possible treatment options may involve physical therapy, medications (over the counter and prescription) and injections. The best way to tell if treatments are working is with a follow-up visit after starting treatment.

Surgery is always considered last. Before it is determined to be necessary, a thorough evaluation will take place so you know why it could be required. Your care team will be there to help you through each step until your back feels better.

How can I prevent back pain from occurring?

Back pain, especially lower back pain, is very common. To prevent it from happening, try not to overload yourself with activity exceeding your body’s ability. A physical therapist can show you exercises that support your goals and relieve back pain.

Staying active, becoming more flexible and keeping muscles strong are a few great ways to minimize your risk. Getting good sleep and maintaining a healthy weight are also positive habits that can work wonders as well. In some cases, the cause of the pain may indicate a more serious problem, and other specialists and treatments may be required.

What is a lumbar fusion?

A lumbar fusion, sometimes called a spinal fusion, is a procedure that helps stabilize your lower back area. This type of operation works by joining at least two vertebrae in the lower back to prevent movement and reduce pain.

When should I consider a spinal fusion?

This type of lumbar fusion may be recommended to treat several spine problems. Keep in mind that many patients with these conditions can likely be successfully treated with other nonsurgical or minimally invasive methods.

Problems that may be treated with lumbar fusion include:

  • Degenerative disc disease: abnormal movement due to wear and tear causing discs that act as cushions between vertebrae to shrink, resulting in an unstable area in the spine.
  • Sciatica: irritation of a spinal nerve or nerves, usually by a herniated or bulging disc.
  • Spinal arthritis: type of arthritis affecting the joints between vertebrae.
  • Spondylolisthesis: abnormal movement when one vertebra slips forward over another.
