Blood Cancer

According to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, blood cancers are the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. However, with early detection and expert treatment, there is hope. More than 1.3 million people are currently living with or in remission from blood cancer.

What Is Blood Cancer?

Blood cancer affects the production and function of your blood cells. In most cases of blood cancer, normal blood cell development is interrupted by uncontrolled growth of an abnormal type of blood cell. These cells prevent your blood from performing its vital functions such as fighting off infection and preventing serious bleeding.

Signs and symptoms vary depending on the type of blood cancer, but may include:

  • Bruising or bleeding easily
  • Bone pain or weakness
  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Fatigue
  • Low blood counts

  • Severe or frequent infections
  • Swelling in the abdomen or feeling full after eating only a small amount
