Pediatrician or Family Medicine?

Wondering which type of provider is best for your child? Whether you choose a pediatrician or a family medicine provider for primary care, you're in good hands. They'll both offer great care to your child and guidance to any parent. They can also help you navigate the health care system when you need a referral to specialty care and other treatments. However, no referral is necessary to schedule an appointment to see a pediatric specialist.

What to Expect at a Child Wellness Checkup

When you bring your child in for a wellness checkup, your family medicine provider or pediatrician will:

  • Check overall physical and behavioral health.
  • Ensure they are meeting all developmental milestones.
  • Listen to your concerns as parents.
  • Provide reassurance and answers to your questions.
  • Cover immunizations to protect kids against common diseases.
  • Guide you with support and advice for your child's growth and development.

In 2027, Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center will unveil a state-of-the-art, six-story tower featuring a new center of clinical excellence for women’s and children’s services. NICU

Children born premature, who have special needs or birth defects may have their needs best met with a neonatologist. Your infant is in good hands at our Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), at the Avera Children’s Hospital designed especially for babies who were born at less than 32 weeks’ gestation or have special medical needs.

In addition to benefiting from on-site neonatal experts, you gain immediate access to off-site pediatric intensivists and neonatologists through telemedicine technology that helps provide the fastest possible care.

Behavioral Health

Avera Children’s Hospital includes the region and city’s only specialized child and adolescent units at the Avera Behavioral Health Hospital. Children (ages 5-12) and adolescents (ages 13-17) receive inpatient treatment within a structured and age-appropriate therapeutic environment. There, they have a safe space to share their problems and learn healthy coping skills.

Hospital & Critical Care

Full spectrum, 24/7 pediatric hospital medicine and critical care are available to diagnose, treat and manage health conditions with services like:

  • Advanced life support
  • Breastfeeding support
