You can rely on accurate pathology and laboratory results that help diagnose health conditions and identify the most effective treatment. Most primary care providers examine and order lab tests for patients, but many specialists — including board-certified infectious disease physicians, endocrinologists, medical oncologists and more — order more complex lab and pathology tests to help guide treatment.

Comprehensive Lab Services

By maintaining the highest possible standards for testing and personal service, Avera Laboratory Network ensures your local health care professionals and hospitals promptly receive the test results and support they need to offer you short turnarounds and enhanced quality of care.

No matter where you receive treatment throughout the Avera system, you’ll have access to the full range of lab services offered by Avera. Though lab test menus vary across clinics and hospitals, you can have a lab drawn no matter where you are and get results back in a reasonable time. If your local lab doesn’t offer a particular test you need, we send specimens to another location.

Offered Lab Services

Among many available laboratory services, your doctor can take advantage of:

  • Blood bank — Identifies blood types (ABO and Rh) and performs tests to determine compatibility of blood for transfusion
  • Hematology — Examines blood and body fluid specimens to determine the type and number of blood cells (red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets); also determines ability of blood to clot
  • Chemistry — Examines body fluid specimens for the body’s metabolic functions, disease markers and drug monitoring.
  • Serology — Tests blood specimens to detect exposure to infectious and disease processes such as hepatitis, syphilis, arthritis, lupus and others

Lab Direct Access Testing Services

Most labs are ordered by physicians. However, not all labs require a physician referral. Avera Lab Direct Access Testing lets you quickly and confidentially access a variety of tests without a doctor’s order.

These tests help you monitor ongoing risks — such as complete blood count, glucose, lipids or hemoglobin — but shouldn’t be a replacement for the personalized care of your primary care provider.
