Palliative care is not just for hospice care, which is meant for people in the final months of life. Palliative care is available to you at any time during an illness while you're in the hospital to help you control pain and symptoms. You can also receive palliative care at the same time as other treatments, such as cancer treatment.
You can receive coordinated palliative care for a variety of conditions, including:
- AIDS
- Alzheimer’s
- Cancer
- Heart disease
- Kidney failure
- Multiple sclerosis
- Parkinson’s
- Respiratory distress
If you’re interested in palliative care, ask your primary care provider or medical specialist for a referral to Avera’s palliative care team.
