Weight-Loss Surgery & Non-Surgical Procedures
Bariatrics is the field of medicine focused on treating and preventing obesity. Many times, a specially designed medical weight-loss program is the ideal treatment. In other cases, a patient might need a non-surgical procedure or bariatric surgery to achieve weight-loss and address risks for weight-related conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, lower life expectancy and more.
Board-certified surgeons and other bariatric experts with the Avera Bariatrics Institute guide and support you every step of the way, empowering you to lose weight safely. Ask your doctor if a weight-loss procedure is right for you.
- All procedures, non-surgical and surgical, aid in weight-loss by limiting the amount of food you can eat and reducing the amount of fat and calories you absorb.
- Your physician and/or surgeon will help you decide on the best option for you.
- Numerous patients have found success through our accredited and nationally recognized bariatric surgery program.
- Keep in mind that a procedure or surgery alone will not change your life. Your dedication to making lifestyle changes is critical for long-term success.
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)
Non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure
- Ideal for patients with a BMI of 30–50 seeking to lose 30–50 pounds.
- Most insurance plans cover ESG, which is a same-day, outpatient procedure.
- An endoscope inserted through the mouth (rather than an incision) with the patient under general anesthesia.
- The physician makes a smaller stomach and forms a gastric sleeve (without removing any part of the stomach).
- Recovery is within a few days.
Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Minimally invasive, laparoscopic surgical procedure, also known as the sleeve gastrectomy
- Ideal for patients with a BMI of 40 or more seeking to lose 50+ pounds.
- Patients with a BMI of 35-39 with an obesity-related health problem such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea and more are also eligible.
- Same day, outpatient surgery that's more common than bypass surgery.
- With the patient under general anesthesia, the surgeon removes about 80% of stomach to make it smaller into the shape of a tube or sleeve.
- Recovery is about two to three weeks.
Gastric Bypass Surgery
Minimally invasive, laparoscopic surgical procedure, also known as a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
- Ideal for patients with a BMI of 40 or more seeking to lose 50+ pounds.
- Patients with a BMI of 35-39 with an obesity-related health problem such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea and more are also eligible.
- Requires inpatient hospital stay for one to two days after surgery.
- With the patient under general anesthesia, the surgeon makes your stomach into a smaller pouch attached to the small intestine, while also rerouting digestive fluids.
- Recovery is about two to three weeks.
