Fertility Support

Family planning and fertility care options are available to aid our patients. No referral needed.

Find a Doctor

Planning a family is an important time for a couple. Women and men in their reproductive years can find fertility support useful if experiencing issues when trying to become pregnant.

Your care begins with a physical exam, followed by a clear discussion of your diagnosis and a personalized treatment plan if needed.

Fertility Guidance & Treatments

If you need fertility support, your primary care provider will refer you to an Avera OB/GYN or another specialist, like an endocrinologist. You can also begin the process by making an appointment with an OB/GYN specialist without a referral.

These specialists follow a diagnosis and care plan to support the best next steps in your fertility journey. Your physician will check in with you throughout the process, helping guide your care.

Private Assessment

Ask your doctor if an infertility and gynecologic health assessment could better help you understand your unique fertility patterns to address:

  • Hormone disorders, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Irregular bleeding
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Recurrent miscarriage

Treatment Options

Both male and female assessments inform what will be best for possible treatment options. This may mean interventions for any identified physical conditions, such as:

  • Cycle monitoring to track ovulation
  • Medications to support ovulation
  • Minimally invasive procedures and other surgical interventions

Fertility Observation

Depending on your health and situation, couples experiencing infertility could benefit by participating in the FertilityCare program at Avera. This program:

  • Increases chances of conceiving
  • Uses a natural approach, with no medications or procedures
  • Is considerably less expensive than other fertility options
  • Is effective for spacing pregnancies and family planning

Family Planning with FertilityCare

An Avera provider trained in natural family planning, or the Creighton Model, can apply this same training to treat gynecologic conditions and reproductive health. FertilityCare™ is a method of family planning or infertility treatment according to the Catholic Church’s teaching.

How FertilityCare Works

This fertility appreciation approach is based upon a couple’s own knowledge of their naturally occurring cyclic phases of fertility and infertility. For some couples experiencing infertility, it can increase the chance of becoming pregnant by 20–40%.

This system has shown success in not only achieving and avoiding pregnancy, but also in treating infertility, chronic miscarriage, ovarian cysts and other gynecologic problems.

Fertility FAQ

Your primary care provider is the best place to turn to with questions about your unique reproductive health journey. Check out these frequently asked questions to learn more about fertility services at Avera.

Does Avera provide fertility care?

Yes, an Avera OB/GYN can support patients by recommending and providing the fertility care options most couples need to address infertility. This may include physical examination, laboratory evaluation and imaging to further evaluate potential causes of infertility. An Avera OB/GYN can also help couples track cycles and monitor ovulation, and prescribe medications if needed.

Does Avera provide in vitro fertilization (IVF)?

No, Avera physicians do not provide IVF treatments. However, Avera offers a range of treatments for fertility issues caused by ovulation disorders or conditions such as endometriosis that can make it difficult to become pregnant. With these treatments, Avera specialists can assist the majority of couples experiencing infertility.

Which infertility conditions might benefit from surgical intervention?

Avera OB/GYN care includes surgery options for patients who have a physical condition that is affecting fertility. Minimally invasive surgery can help to support patients with the following conditions:

  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Uterine or cervical polyps

What is the Creighton Model?

Avera’s fertility support is based on the Creighton Model FertilityCare™ System, an internationally recognized family planning system. As an accredited program in line with the Catholic faith, this approach shows you and your partner how to observe and record the biological markers when you’re most likely to conceive.
